Solar Panel Types Explained: Monocrystalline, Polycrystalline, Bifacial — Which is Best for Odisha?

Walking into a solar showroom, or even browsing online quotes, the sheer number of panel options is overwhelming. Monocrystalline, polycrystalline, half-cut, bifacial, TOPCon, HJT — each with a different price point and a salesperson claiming theirs is the best. Here is an honest, engineering-based comparison relevant to Odisha’s climate and the typical Indian rooftop.

The Three Main Technologies

Monocrystalline (Mono-Si)

How it works: Each cell is cut from a single silicon crystal, giving it a uniform black appearance and high electron mobility.

Efficiency: 19–23% (leading brands) — the highest of the three main types.

Performance in Odisha’s climate:

  • Excellent in direct sunlight
  • Better high-temperature performance coefficient than polycrystalline (loses less output on hot summer afternoons)
  • Performs relatively better in diffuse light (overcast or hazy conditions)

Typical cost: ₹28–₹38 per Wp (watt-peak) for Tier-1 brands

Best for: Most residential rooftops in Odisha where roof space is limited and efficiency matters. The standard choice for PM Surya Ghar installations.


Polycrystalline (Poly-Si)

How it works: Made from multiple silicon crystals melted together, giving a bluish speckled appearance.

Efficiency: 16–18% — lower than mono, so you need more roof area for the same kW output.

Performance in Odisha’s climate:

  • Adequate in high-irradiation zones
  • Higher temperature coefficient means more output loss on hot days compared to mono
  • Slightly worse in low-light conditions

Typical cost: ₹22–₹28 per Wp — the cheaper option

Best for: Situations where cost is the primary constraint and you have ample roof space. Becoming less common as mono prices have dropped significantly.

Bifacial Panels

How it works: Both the front and rear faces of the panel generate power. The rear captures light reflected off the roof surface (albedo), ground, or surrounding structures.

Efficiency: 20–24% front face + 10–20% additional gain from the rear, depending on mounting conditions.

Performance in Odisha’s climate:

  • Best suited for open-field or elevated ground-mount installations
  • On rooftops with dark (low-albedo) surfaces — common in Odisha — rear-side gain is typically only 5–8%, not the 15–20% claimed in ideal conditions
  • Requires a clear gap (>200 mm) beneath panels to benefit from rear illumination
  • More durable glass-glass construction resists humidity and salt-air better

Typical cost: ₹35–₹48 per Wp — premium tier

Best for: Ground-mounted systems, carports, or elevated RCC rooftops with a reflective surface. Overkill for most standard residential rooftops where the rear gain is minimal.


Advanced Cell Technologies

Half-Cut Cells

Not a separate technology but an engineering improvement applied to mono or poly panels. Each cell is laser-cut in half, reducing internal resistance losses and improving shade tolerance. Most Tier-1 panels now use half-cut cells by default. Look for this feature when comparing spec sheets.

TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact)

The leading edge of commercial panel technology as of 2024–2025. Efficiency reaches 22–24%, with better performance in high temperatures and low light. Prices have dropped rapidly — now only 10–15% premium over standard mono. Will likely become the standard within 2–3 years.

HJT (Heterojunction Technology)

Combines monocrystalline silicon with amorphous silicon layers. The lowest temperature coefficient of any commercial panel technology — excellent for hot climates like Odisha. Efficiency 22–25%. Still carries a significant price premium. Best suited for premium residential projects where roof space is severely limited.

What to Look for in a Panel Specification Sheet

When evaluating quotes, compare these five numbers:

  1. Rated power (Wp) — should match the label on the physical panel
  2. Module efficiency (%) — higher means less roof area needed
  3. Temperature coefficient of Pmax — look for values closer to −0.30%/°C (TOPCon/HJT) rather than −0.40%/°C (standard mono). Important for Odisha summers.
  4. Product warranty — 12 years minimum; Tier-1 brands offer 15 years
  5. Performance warranty — 80% rated power at year 25 is the industry standard; some premium brands now offer 82–84%
