Why Odisha soil demands chemical earthing

Odisha's laterite and coastal soil has high resistivity and corrodes plain GI electrodes within 3–5 years, driving resistance upward and leaving buildings unprotected. The state also sits in one of India's highest lightning-strike-density zones — over 60 strikes per km² per year in some districts.

Proper chemical earthing uses a conductive compound around the electrode that holds moisture and maintains low resistance across seasons. We use BIS-approved compound-filled electrodes and test the achieved resistance on site before handing over the certificate.

Our earthing services

Chemical earthing

Compound-filled electrodes (copper-bonded or GI) with bentonite/graphite compound. Stable resistance year-round. IS 3043 compliant.

Conventional pipe & plate earthing

For lower-cost requirements and rural locations. GI pipe or copper plate electrodes with correct burial depth and maintenance chambers.

Lightning protection system (LPS)

Air termination network, down conductors, bonding, and surge protection devices per IS/IEC 62305. Mandatory for buildings over 9 m.

Surge protection devices (SPD)

Type 1, 2, and 3 SPDs at the main panel and sub-distribution boards. Protects appliances and solar inverters from surge events.

Ground resistance testing

On-site Wenner-method or fall-of-potential testing with calibrated equipment. Test report and certificate issued on the day.

Solar system earthing

Dedicated DC earthing for panel frames plus AC earthing for the inverter and mounting structure — required for every solar installation.

Critical reminder

Solar installations require dedicated earthing

MNRE and DISCOM inspection requirements mandate separate DC earthing (panel frames, array structure) and AC earthing (inverter enclosure, AC distribution) for every grid-tied solar system. Without correct earthing, your DISCOM commissioning inspection will fail and your net meter will not be installed. All M-Lite solar projects include this as standard — not as an add-on.

Odisha's coastal soil and mineral-rich laterite create significant stray voltage and lightning hazards. The state has one of India's highest lightning strike densities. Chemical earthing in this soil profile must use compound-filled electrodes, not plain GI rods — standard rods corrode within 3–5 years here.

IS 3043 requires earthing resistance below 5 Ω for general installations and below 1 Ω for power distribution systems. We test and certify the achieved value. If above 5 Ω, we add electrodes or increase the compound fill until the target is met — no shortcuts.

Annual testing is recommended. Soil moisture, compaction, and chemical depletion change resistance over time. We offer annual test certificates with a mobile lab — your insurance and compliance records will require this.

IS/IEC 62305 requires LPS for buildings over 9 m in height, or any building with a risk assessment score above the threshold (hospitals, schools, data centres automatically qualify). We carry out a risk assessment free of charge during the site survey.

Yes. Every solar installation must have a dedicated DC earthing system for the array frames and a separate AC earthing for the inverter enclosure. We install both as a standard part of every M-Lite solar project. Retrofitting earthing for an existing solar system is also a service we offer.
